The History Behind The Gerber Clothing Brand

When you hear the name Gerber, you might think about the line of baby food products and the iconic Gerber Baby. What you might not realize is that the Gerber line of baby clothing is associated with the baby food brand because they are both owned by the Gerber Product Company, a subsidiary of Nestle.

How Gerber Got Its Name

The Gerber Product Company was founded in 1927 by Daniel Frank Gerber. At the time, Gerber owned a canning facility that focused on producing canned fruits and vegetables. Gerber’s wife had been hand-straining fruits and vegetables at home for their young children, and Daniel Gerber decided to begin producing puréed food products for babies.

Branching Out

Throughout the 1960s, Gerber would branch out and diversify its product and service offerings. The brand began to produce several baby products including feeding supplies, insurance products, and small toys. Today, you can find organic baby clothes by Gerber in most baby clothing stores, and you can also shop for organic baby clothes by Gerber online through a huge number of digital stores.

The Gerber Baby

The Gerber Baby is featured on most of the brand’s advertising and marketing materials, as well as the packaging for its food and clothing products. The original Gerber Baby was Ann Turner Cook, and her infamous portrait was drawn by artist Dorothy Hope Smith. The Gerber Baby image was created in 1928, and due to its widespread popularity, the Gerber brand trademarked the image in 1931.

In 1996, the Gerber Baby image transformed, and a new portrait was commissioned. Since then, numerous babies have taken on the role of the Gerber Baby, and the company has taken steps to showcase Gerber Baby images that represent young children from different demographics across a range of ability levels. A baby with Down Syndrome was chosen to represent the company in 2018 and adopted Gerber Babies, as well as Gerber Babies with missing limbs, have also been featured in the role.
